Google : The Gentle Giant of The Internet

Google Earth. Google Books. Google Maps. Google is one of the most powerful brands in the world. Apart from Google.com (the world’s most popular search engine), they’ve got so much to offer. Here are a few of their web-based services:

Google Books was introduced in 2004. This is a massive database of more than 15 million books. You can read the books online or download them for free.

Google Maps was launched in 2005. You can use it to check out restaurants, visit places in the city, or plan your next trip. The Street View option lets you travel along streets as you see everything around you. These images are produced by Google’s 360⁰ cameras.

Google Earth, which was also launched in 2005, has images for the Earth, outer space and the ocean. With Google Earth you can travel around the world, explore the sky, or dive under the ocean.

Google Translate was launched in 2006. This program allows you to translate documents or text simply by copying and pasting it into the program. There are more than 40 languages that you can use.

Gmail is a free webmail service for sending and receiving e-mails. It become open to the public in February 2007.

Where would we be without Google?

Google is an American internet and computer software company. It was founded by Sergei Brin and Larry Page (the “Google guys”), and has been operating since 1998. Their original objective was to ”organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Later, they added the phrase “Don’t be evil” to promote their anti-corporate philosophy. The name Google comes from a misspelling of “googol” – the number one, followed by one hundred zeros.

How To Give A Great Presentation

Many people are nervous about talking in front of an audience, usually because they are afraid of making a mess of it. Ironically, it is uncontrolled nerves that are most likely to lead to a poor performance - so building confidence through preparation and practice is really important.

Tape yourself
When you practice your presentation, do it with a tape recorder or with a video recorder. Plat it back to find out wich bits sound weak.

Prepare it early
Don’t wait until the very last minute to work on your presentation. Do it when you still have plenty of time. Remember, the soonery you do it, the better.

Practice your intonation
When you speak, try to speak with passion and enthusiasm. If you speak passionately, it will make up for other shortcomings. Speaking with the same intonation all the time leads to boredom among your audience. You may need to use pauses for effect, too.

Make cue cards and handouts
A set of small-size cue cards will help you to go on with your presentation. Jot down the important points and read them when you get stuck. Distribute handouts, if any to the audience after you finish your presentation. You don’t want them to read whihle you’re talking, do you?

Eating before you present
This sounds less important, but preparing your physical condition is also one thing you should remember. Standing and talking in front of a lot of people consumes a lot of energy. Eating before you present.

Ask help from your best buds
Ask your best friends to smile at you when they see that you’re nervous. Their smile will boost your confidence. If you can’t ask anyone to do it for you, just picture the smiles in your mind.

All About Hair

Article first published as All About Hair on Technorati.

Hair, a part of our body, has a lot of amazing facts to tell. Want to hear its tale? Read on.

What Hair is made of?
Hair is made of keratin a kind of protein that also makes up our nails.

What Hair Does for Us
  • Our body is covered all over in hair (all 5 millions of them!) except the palms of our hands, the soles of our feet, the mucous membranes (which cover the insides of our body organs), and lips. Good thing only the hair on top of our head can grow long. Imagine if every hair on our body were as long as our head hair!
  • Hair's most important function is for show, of course. We color it, perm it, trim, style it, adorn it with pins and ribbons-whatever it takes to make us look good. But hair in general is more than just an accessory. Take eyebrows and eyelashes for instance. They help filter dust so that our eyes can see better. Nose hair, besides to filter dust from the air we breathe, is also needed to warm the air before entering our body.
Hair Grows
  • Hair is physically dead; what we see as a strand of hair is actually a chain of dead keratin cells. Keratin is produced inside the hair follicles-mini sacs under the outer layer of our skin (epidermis). When new keratin cells are produced, the old ones are pushed out and through the skin, causing the hair to “grow” longer.
  • Hair (or rather, the follicles) is the second fastest growing organ in human body after the bone marrow. The hair on our head can grow at a rate of 1.25 cm per month.
  • Ever wonder why your hair can't get longer after reaching a certain length although you never cut it? It's because a single strand of hair usually grows up to a maximum of 70 to 90 cm stays on our head for two to seven years before it falls out.
Why Hair Colors and Textures Differ
  • The natural color and type of our hair depend on our genes. The percentage of natural coloring (pigments) determines whether we have blond, red, brown, or black hair.
  • The coloring also determines hew much hair we have on our head. Blond has the most hair: 120.000. Brown and black have about 100.000, while red has 80,000.
  • As a person gets old, the pigments in his/her hair follicles die, resulting in white or grey hair.
  • Why do some people have kinky hair, some others wavy, still others straight? Apparently this depends on the shape of the follicles, which is also ethnic-gene-related. People with round follicles have straight hair, while those with oval follicles have wavy hair. Africans, with almost flat follicles, have kinky hair.
  • Sometimes the shape of follicles changes because of growth or illnesses. That's why sometimes people who had straight hair as i child have kinky hair as adults.
  • What Our Hair Says About Us
  • Hair can tell a lot of things the person. It can tell us what the person eats, what ethnic group he/she belongs to, even-to a certain extent-his/her lifestyles. A person’s hair can tell if he/she smokes, takes drugs, or drinks.
  • The one thing hair can’t tell is whether the owner is male of female.
Fact or fiction?
Hair and nails keep growing for some time after a person dies, Fiction. When a person-dies, the flesh shrinks because of dehydration. This gives the appearance of longer hair and nails (Now that's rather gruesome, don't you think?)

We lose about 100 hairs every day. Fact. Hair goes through a cycle where it must die and fall. But don't worry; you won't go bald like Homer here because new hair will replace it. In fact, you would have to lose 50% of your hair before people notice it.

Hair is very strong. Fact. Healthy hair is as strong as aluminum. Woven into a rope, it supposedly can support a suspended weight of about 2000 pounds, as often featured in circuses (But boy, would it hurt!)
The more often you trim your hair, the faster it will grow. Fiction. Hair grows according to a more or less fixed pace, 1.25 cm a month. So trimming it more often won't make it grow 4 cm in a month. This also applies to the myth that hair grows faster in warm weather.

Exercises You Can Do Without Digging into Your Pocket

So you have set your heart to become as fit as a fiddle : where to start? You don’t need expensive equipments. Here some exercises you can do without digging into your pocket:

Walking
It sounds unbelievable but nowadays people are walking less frequently mostly because they prefer to take motorcycle or car even to go to the nearest stall. Walking actually improves the condition of your heart and lungs and also works the muscles of the lower body. Walking may also improve bone density but is considered a low impacts sport because walking puts less strain on the joints compared to other forms of exercise.
Some people exercise by power walking. It’s kind of walk where you walk so fast almost break into a run. The funny thing is that power walking actually burns more calories compared to running at the same pace.
Other walking exercises you can do are:
• Using the stairs instead of the lift. If you have to go the top level, you can start by taking 2-3 flights of stairs and increasing it every week.
• Taking a walk during lunch hours. Walking for half an hour after a meal can cut the amount of fat you have stored because it’s used for exercising.
• Choosing a different route once a week and taking a longer walk to keep you stimulated.

Running/Jogging
Running or jogging can be done everywhere and anytime. Running/jogging is a high impact sport, meaning it may increase or maintin bone density.
To start exercising, you should warm up first by walking at a brisk pace while gradually increasing speed until you jog slowly. Run at a pace where you can still do a conversation while running. If you feel like you are losing your breath, try to slow down or walk for a while to breathe.
For a start don’t run too long. Try to run 10 minutes in total , do this every two or three days. Decrease the walking time and increase the running until you can run a full ten minutes. Don’t stop immediately after doing a jog/run, cool down by jogging slowly or walk until you heart beats normally. Next, increase the time of your run until you can manage 30 minutes three times a week. Feeling inspired? Don’t try to increase your running time more than ten per cent each week.

Tips if you getting bored:
• Be realistic; don’t try to become a marathon runner in three months if you’re never run before.
• Make running a habit just like cleaning your teeth.
• Record your progress by marking “X”s on your calendar, write the time each day, how you felt, where you went, etc...
• Changing the place were you run, use the thread mill in the gym, run a different route, around a different house complex, etc...

Hobbies for a Healthier Life

Today is life – the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto. Dale Carnegie, American lecturer, author, 1888-1955

Want to stay healthy? Working out and sports are not enough since health is more than just physical wellbeing. Problems that can make us stressed can occur every day. And to get balanced health – physically and psychologically - we should have a hobby done regularly that can provide mental stimulation and stress relief. Besides, hobbies can keep life interesting.

Home-Based Activities
Who says staying at home is boring? There are a loads of thing you can do at home. You can start from the outside to inside the home.

Playing with puzzles: This activity calls for great patience. It helps you forget your worries and focus on piecing together the bits and pieces. Make sure that you don’t lose any single piece of the puzzle or you’ll never be able to finish it.
Gardening: You can try it if you want. Pay attention to your garden and check all leaves and flowers. Don’t forget to check the soil as well: is it too dry, too wet, or just perfect. If the soil is too hard, you can loosen it to give the plants some oxygen. Don’t forget to water where needed.
Playing mechanic: Starting from a simple activity like washing your bicycle, motorbike, or car and polishing its wheels to checking the engine. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you know nothing about the engine, just take the vehicle to real mechanic.
Cooking: Try a new recipe that can be enjoyed by your family and friends, If you’re still a newcomer in cooking try a simple recipe first. Snacks that are easily made and can pamper the tongue would be a good choice.
Redecorating your room: Painting the wall, changing the decoration, or simply cleaning the room and throwing away stuff that you don’t use anymore.
Painting: Just decide what kind of paint – water color, oil, or acrylic – and medium – canvas, fabric, glass, ceramic, or any other surface that can be painted – you want to use. Then let your creativity run riot in expressing yourself. Playing with colors can be really delightful!
Scrap booking: Think of moment you’d like to remember and collect the pictures of it. Write the stories and illustrate them with memorabilia. Scrap booking is a great way to rememner precious mements and people. Looking back on happy moments and wonderful people is a great way to relax and reduce stress.

Wherever You-Can-Do Activities
On a long flight, in a doctor’s waiting lounge, in a cafe – anywhere you are you can do these hobbies:
Drawing: Never leave home without your sketch book and your pencil, pen, or marker. An idea to draw can come any time.

Reading: A book can be your best friend since you can bring it anyplace. It doesn’t need to be a heavy tome which may make you look like a nerd. A small book that’s handy and can be put in your pocket or a small bag works just as well.
Origami: Some people are very good at this paper folding art. They can make anything they like using this technique. The ideal paper for this activity is, of course, origami paper, but you can surely use any piece of paper or plastic – like a candy wrapper – that you have in your bag. Just unleash your creativity.
Writing: A notebook and a writing utensil will help you do this hobby any time and anywhere you want. If you forget your notebook, just make good use of any piece of paper like a napkin, a used biill, an old parking ticket, or any other piece of paper you find in your bag.
Listening to music: Equip yourself with any gadget for this hobby, a cell phone with extra memory card card, MP3, or MP4 player. What you must remember is not to turn the music full blast when using these gadgets or you’ll bust your ears.

Outdoor Activities
Feel like doing something outside your house? Here are some ideas:

Travelling: Wherever you want to go, choosing the rigt companion is important. You don’t want to travel with a complainer, do you? Another thing is, always equip yourself with all the documents needed plus enough knowledge about your destination.
Hanging out with friends: What kind of places do you like to go? Malls, cafes, and sport centers are favorite places to hang out. Whatever your choice, eating and sharing with pals is fun. Just thing of your budget before you decide where to hang out.
Photography: Maximize the function of your camera. A sophisticated camera doesn’t guarantee good pictures if you don’t know how to operate it. So learn about the camera you have, find an object, and push the shutter button!

The Benefits of Napping

Do you know that taking a nap gives you numerous benefits? Some experts reveal that taking a nap for while can decrease the possibility of death by heart attack, especially in young men. A research in Greece also shows that taking a nap for half an hour, at least three times a week, reduces the risk of a heart attack by 37%. Other studies have also shown that napping is good for our mental health. A deep sleep in the middle of the day has other benefits such as:

Increases Productivity
It’s not good to force our body to work all day long. If you drink a cup of coffee to rest your mind, why don’t you replace it with a nap? It only takes 10 to 20 minutes to freshen you up. As we nap, our body, eyes, and mind will get a deep rest. When you wake up you will be more alert and more focused on your work. If you think napping is impossible for busy people like you, take a look at this fact: The Japanese are used to taking a “power nap” for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day during lunch break to increase productivity. Some Japanese officers even have napping rooms ready for their workers.

Promotes Ideal Weight
Some researches believe that sleeping at noon promotes a good body metabolism that results in an ideal weight. We can say that it’s cheap and nice way of losing weight.

Boost Brain Performance
Some researchers state that people who take a nap are faster in problem-solving and smarter in taking decisions. Taking a nap also improves our crativity and sharpens our senses and memories.

Rock on, Scavengers!

Every day, people produce many types of garbage, such as paper, plastic, glass, and alumunium. These recyclable materials are ususaly disposed along with other household waste, wich is then collected and transported to the city landfill.

Do you know what happens next? A large part of these materials are piled up into the ground where they go through the process of breaking down into the smallest elements, otherwise known as decomposotition. Paper needs approximately five months to decompose, while plastic bags take up to 20 years. Alumunium takes up to 200 years to decompose, plastic beverage bottles about 450 years, and glass bottles and plastic jugs about a million years! That’s quite a long time to spend in a landfill!

That’s why garbage scavengers, who are often overlooked, play an important role. Their role is quite significant in recycling materials like paper, plastic, glass and alumunium. Look around, and you’ll see them out on the streets, in the dumpsters, or walking around your neighborhood. They are easily identified by their sack or pushcart, wich they use to stuff in types of material wich they consider good enough to be collected and sold to dealers. These dealers pay them according to the type of material. At the dealers’, recyclable materials are sorted and cleaned. Bottles or jars ussualy require washing, removal of labels, and removal of baottle caps. Plastic cups are cleaned from their plastic top. Dealers then sell their recyclable materials to each of the materials’ recycling plant.

At a paper recycling factory, waste paper is turned to pulp, then undergoes several treatments such as coarse screening, ink removal, fine cleaning, brightening, and de colorization. The finishished recycled pulp is then either sent to a mill for papermaking or it is formed into sheets of pulp, called “wet lap,” for shipment and sale. Glass recycling factories take waste glass to crush into little pieces and melt along with other raw materials into a liquid state called gobs. These gobs are then dropped into a mold to form new bottles and jars. At the alumunium recycling plant, cans are shredded, remelted with virgin alumunium and cast into the new ingots. The ingots are rolled into long, thin sheets that are coiled and sent to the can manufacturing plant to be made into new alumunium cans. Plasting recycling factories sort plastic by polymer type and color, which are then washed, chopped into smaller pieces, and resorted. The plastic pieces are dried, melted, filtered for contaminants, and then squeezed out into strands, which are spun into fiber or cut into plastic pellets.
So through a chain of garbage scavengers and dealers, whose roles of recycling often go unnoticed, collected materials are eventually recycled. Paper, plastic, glass and alumunium are saved from a destiny of being pilled up at a landfill. Thumbs up for garbage scavengers.

You can help too!
Be a participant in the recycling of paper, plastic, glass, and alumunium by sorting them fisrt instead of throwing them right away in the trash can. Keep them in separate place, then donate or sell your junk collection to a garbage scavengers. By doing this, not only do you help the scavengers but also contribute to preserving the earth.

Public Transportation Etiquette

Article first published as Public Transportation Etiquette on Technorati.

Most of us are accustomed to using public transportation. Traveling by bus, train, plane, taxi, or other means of public transportation means sharing a ride with others to get to our destination. Below are several basic traveling etiquette rules to make the trip more enjoyable for all.

Keep to your space
Keep your belongings (including yourself) in your own space. Do not stuff a suitcase in your seatmate’s area. Sit on your assigned seat. Keep your elbows at a comfortable but not bossy over position on the shared armrest.

Don’t be talky traveler
Even if youa are a chatty person, not everyone else in the mood to be chatted by strangers. General questions might even feel interrogational, so avoid questions that are too personal. Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your voice down when you are conversing with your seatmate, or on the phone.

Avoid the smelly situation
If you are traveling in an enclosed area, avoid causing strong smells, like wearing too much perfume. Although it might seem unimportant, an unplesant odor can make the whole journey unpleasant, too.

Small but important
• Keep handy change for fares, or for buying snacks.
• Dress comfortably. You might have your hands full with luggage and other things, so dressing simple is the answer.
• Double-check your ticket, ID card, and other important documents like passport to make sure you have everything you’re going to need.

Rules are NOT meant to be broken
Folllowing the rules is an obligation for every passanger. This way, the voyage will be more orderly and safe. There are several things to keep mind, such as not smoking in a non-smoking area, putting your seatbelt on, turning off your electronic devices when necessary, and queuing for your turn.

Mind your manners
It’s important to be polite wheter it’s to ask your seatmate to exchange seats, request a drink to the stewardess, or inquire about something to the conductor. Being nice, perhaps with a sincere smile, might help you get what you ask for.

Never Talk to Strangers

Article first published as Never Talk to Strangers on Technorati.

Having a relationship on the internet is something trendy nowadays, especially young people. In this cyber world they can interact with other netters without disclosing their true identity. That’s perhaps, the positive point of such a relationship. However, there’s also a negative side of it. Since no true identity is known, it is possible for anyone to offend or harass others via the internet.

Here are some tips that might help you to kick off any irresponsible cybermate :

Ignore the person totally. In most cases the sad “predator” will wander off and look for someone else. “Ignore” them if you have that facility (an “ignore” command in your chat program), and make everything the harasser says become invisible. Freeze them right out! Don’t send rude messages back tou your abuser unless you are ready for a flame war! Remember, they want your attention. Don’t give it to them! In live chat the ignore button is your best friend.

Change rooms or channels. This is like changing compartments on a train if there someone in your compartment harassing you. Of course if you are in your favorite chat room, this is not a very good option.
If the harasser follows you - and in live chat you can often be located again if you stay on the same system – you can always change to a different chat network. There are lots of different chat networks around the world to choose from. Most of harassers will then forget you and go find someone lese to harass.

Ask them politely to leave you alone. Consider the difference between telling them privately and publicly. For example if you get an obscene private message while on a channel, don’t respond to it privately. Respond to the message publicly so that you can draw the attention of other netters. However, if you humiliate someone in public, he or she is more likely to take revenge on you. That’s the consequence you have to take. The choice is yours.

Give a warning. “Please leave me alone or I will report you to the chat administration for harassment.” But keep calm, cool and professional. Remember you can report a harasser to the administrators of the chat service you are using.

Log off from service. Come back online 30 minutes later.

Change your online nickname. Then it will be harder for the harasser to find you.
Learn how to be a channel (room) operator/supervisor yourself. In IRC you can set up and “Op” your own channel and that gives you the power to both kick abusers off your channel and also to ban them from ever being able to come back again. Alternatively, aks a chat room supervisor to ban that person for you.
In serious cases where you believe you are in physical danger, (e.g. if your harasser gets hold of your home telephone number or your home address, or if any serious threats are made against you), and you are under 18, tell your parents about it. This could be a matter for the police. Remember, if you are harassed, it’s not your fault.

Don’t keep your harassment a secret. Harassers get their power from fact that many harassment victims are too embarrassed or ashamed to make the matter public. Tell your friends online about the person who abusing you. And don’t be ashamed to be angry! You can also tell a friend you trust, your parents or other family members.

Remember, it is your decision as to when someone is going too far. If you threatened, then you are threatened. Believe in your feelings. Don’t do anything you don’t want. You are in control here!

Whatever happens, don’t panic. No one can physically hurt you through your computer. You are safe right where you are. Whatever is happening may be stressing you out, but the “off” button is always right there in front of you. Don’t be afraid to use. It can be your most powerful weapon. Troublemakers are a lame and sad minority. Don’t let them spoil your fun!

ClipConverter : The Tool to Download, Clip, and Convert Web Videos

In an ideal world, everybody would have a perfect internet connection and we could watch streaming web videos on any gadget without a glitch. But we’re not living in an ideal world, and many of us have to spend ten minutes (or more) waiting for the video page to load just to watch a one-minute video. Besides a slow internet connection, people prefer to watch downloaded web videos instead of streaming the content to their device because they want to play those videos on non-streaming-capable mobile devices, burn the videos onto CDs/DVDs or play them on TV.

Meet ClipConverter (http://www.clipconverter.cc/). This tool is no ordinary web video downloader because it also allows users to clip and convert web videos before downloading them.

Just Add the URLs
If you want to use ClipConverter only to download a web video, all you need is the video URL. ClipConverter supports many web video services like YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, and direct download video links. You can also upload videos from your hard drive to be converted.
The power of ClipConverter lies in its ability to convert web videos to the format that you want/need, including audio only. Here are the supported media formats :
- Audio : MP3, AAC, WMA, M4A, OGG
- Video : MP4, 3GP, AVI, MPG, WMV, FLV
Another great feature of ClipConverter is the ability to clip web videos. You can choose to either download the full video or only a specific part of it.

Taking the Shortcut
If you do a lot of web video downloading and converting, repeatedly copying and pasting video URLs is impractical. It is easier and faster to do the process straight from the video sites.
There are two ways to do that. ClipConverter provides users with a browser add-on/ extension (available for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari), and a bookmarklet (for other browsers, or as a complimentary tool to the add-on). If your browser is supported, you can download and install the tool.

With the add-on enabled, you’ll have an additional button on the video sites: the ClipConverter button. Clicking on it will bring you to the ClipConverter site to process the video. The same thing will happen if you click the bookmarklet button when you are viewing a video page.

If you love watching and downloading web videos, you’ll find ClipConverter very useful. So go ahead and use the service. It’s free.

How to Save Money

Top tips on how to save money :
  • When you’re buying something expensive, ask for a discount for using cash. If you use a credit card, the shop has pay two to four percent to the bank. So, if you pay cash (or write a cheque), you’re saving them money.
  • In general, it never hurts to ask for a 10 or 20% discount when you’re buying something big such as a TV, a refrigrator or a computer. Simply say that you might be interested in buying it, but aren’t sure and only have X amount to spend. They can only say no!
  • Don’t buy extended warranties. Eighty percent are never used, and they are never used, and they’re a major profit item for the vendor, which is why they’re also so desperate for you to buy them!
  • Choose the times you go shopping very carefully. For example, you’ll make a huge saving if you buy next year’s Halloween costume on 1st November (just after Halloween), or your Christmas decoration in January, right after Christmas.
  • Always shop with a list. That way, you’ll avoid making any snap purchases. Depending on what you’re shopping for, you can easily save between 10 and 15% with this tip alone.
  • Never go shopping for food when you’re hungry as you’ll inevitably buy more than you need. Also avoid shopping if you’re feeling a bit depressed. It may lift your spirits temporarily, but you’ll also probably end up with something you don’t really need.
  • Keep your receipts and don’t hesitate to return things you don’t want. Also, bear in mind that many shops will refund the difference if you find an item cheaper elsewhere after you’ve bought it.
  • Get a store card and use your discount coupons whenever you get them.
  • Don’t pay for features you don’t need. Fancy gadgets or extras on everything from cars to MP3 players are often high-profit-margin items for manufacturers and dealers. Even if it only costs “a little more”, why buy things you’ll never use? Fewer gadgets can also mean less in repair bills.
  • Sell things you don’t need or use any more. Simply register with eBay or any other auction site. Also, use these sites to buy second-hand goods. Some items may be as good as new, but they’re only half the price!
  • Walking or jogging in your neighbourhood is free, and fresh air is better for you than the stuffy atmosphere of a health club or gym. Also, don’t buy expensive sports equipment until you’re sure really need it.
  • Always buy second-hand cars. New vehicles lose about 50% of their value in their first year, but may still have 70% of their useful life left. That’s why used cars are nearly always a better deal than new ones. Plus, the insurance cost is lower.

Relishing Sweet Treats Without Guilt

New Year's is behind us. But most of us are still enveloped by the festive atmosphere sense of spiritual satisfaction and moments of joyous celebration. We have visited many friends and relative attended many parties and enjoyed lots of delicious dishes-cookies, snacks, cakes, soft drinks, candies and ice cream. Hmmm, heavenly yummy….  But oops! Did you know that consuming too much of these deliciously sweet snacks may causes our body to drown in sugar? Well, we’d better watch our intake of sweet treats. Otherwise our obsession with sweet food can contribute to health problems.

Sweet, sweet, sweet
Sugar (sucrose) is a carbohydrate that is naturally found in every fruit and vegetable. It is the main product of photosynthesis, the process by which plants transform the sun's energy into food. Sugar occurs in greatest quantity in sugar cane and sugar beets, from which it is separated for commercial use.
We can find sugar in almost every kind of food and drink. Because its use is so common, it is difficult to accept that it has a significant role in contributing to certain diseases.

Types of Sugar
Sugar is available in many forms. Because of these different forms, sugar is also used in many types of food preparation.
Granulated: Granulated sugar differs in crystal size. Each crystal size provides unique functional characteristics that make this type of sugar appropriate for a food processor's special need.

“Regular” Sugar, Sugar Fine or Fine Sugar: “Regular” sugar, as it is known to consumers, is the sugar found in every home's sugar bowl and most commonly used in home food preparation. It is the white sugar called for in cookbook recipes.

Fruit Sugar: Fruit sugar is slightly finer than 'regular' sugar and is used in dry mixes such as gelatin desserts, pudding mixes and drink mixes. Fruit sugar has a more uniform crystal size than 'regular' sugar.

Sanding Sugar: Another large crystal sugar, sanding sugar, is used mainly in the baking and confectionery industries to sprinkle on top of baked goods. The large crystals reflect light and give the product a sparkling appearance.

Brown Sugar: Brown sugar consists of sugar crystals coated in molasses syrup with natural flavor and color. Many sugar refiners produce brown sugar by boiling special molasses syrup until sugar crystals form. It is often used in tea, coffee or on top of cereals.

Liquid Sugar: Liquid sugar was developed before today's methods of sugar processing made the handling and transportation of granulated sugar practical. Available commercially only in liquid form, it is sweeter than granulated sugar.

Watch Out for the Sweets
Don't be a Sweet: Use sugar only in moderation. Sugary foods have too few nutrients and contribute to tooth decay, cough, obesity and diabetes. Further-more, they can also cause osteoporosis and heart disease.

Practice a healthy lifestyle: Christmas and New Year's parties are the perfect times to enjoy cheesecake, chocolate cookies, a glass of syrup, soft drinks or some sweet snacks. But remember; don't eat just for pleasure or to satisfy emotional hunger. In fact, no portion size will satisfy your craving. Practicing a healthy lifestyle enables you to enjoy sweet treats without guilt.

Create a healthy relationship with food: Food is meant to be one of life's pleasurable experiences. Food is not the enemy. The key to developing a healthy relationship with food is to eliminate the word 'diet' from your vocabulary. Why? Because dieting can cause food cravings.

Try balanced eating: Try to eat regularly throughout the day. Start when you are not so hungry and stop when you are satisfied, not full.

Well folks, living without sugar are impossible for us. But we might end up getting sick if we consume too much sweet food. On the other hand, if we balance our food intake, we can relish sweet treats without guilt!

Annoying Monthly Visitor

Article first published as Annoying Monthly Visitor on Technorati.

Every month, many girls undergo moments that drive them mad. Everything seems to come loose before and even during menstruation. All of a sudden your boyfriend has become so annoying, your best buddies appear unreliable, your mom's fussiness has increased tenfold, and your dad seems to be less and less sympathetic about your problems. Not to mention your brothers and sisters...ugh!

Menstruation
Wait, gals! Don't put the blame entirely on your period if it plays havoc with your mood. It helps a lot to know more about this monthly guest. Menstruation is a natural process that happens to all women. The ideal menstrual cycle occurs once every 28 days. Usually it lasts for 2-7 days. The easiest way to keep track of your menstrual cycle is by marking the calendar. You can mark every day that you bleed calendar, beginning with the first day of your period. Don't worry if your period comes two days earlier or later than it did the previous month. This has to do with the calculation of the period which is different from the calculation on the calendar. So an early or late start is still considered normal as long as the cycle ranges from 22 to 35 days.

The bleeding during a period happens because the uterine lining (endometrium) is shed. Every month, woman's womb builds lining as preparation for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy fails to happen, the built lining is shed as tissues mixed with blood. The shedding stimulates the womb muse to contract. The contractions cause an uncomfortable feeling in some women. This uncomfortable feeling, often called cramps, painful menstruation, or menstrual pain, varies from mild to severe. Lower abdominal (tummy) cramp is common but the pain can also spread to the lower back and thighs. Some pain during menstruation is normal but excessive pain is not. However, excessive menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) affects nearly 15% of menstruating women around their period time, causing time loss from school or work.

TWO TYPES OF EXCESSIVE MENSTRUAL PAIN
Severe menstrual pain falls into two categories: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea. The first refers to menstrual pain that happens to women who have no problems within or outside their uteri (wombs). Factors that contribute to primary dysmenorrhea are:
  • Emotional imbalance: Emotional women who have little awareness of the menstrual process suffer greatly from this discomfort. So, being rational and calm bring tremendous benefits to women.
  • Insomnia: Most insomniacs suffers from menstrual pain.
  • Strict diet and lack of nutrition: Be careful if you are on a diet. Excessive dieting and lack of nutrition can also result in this undesirable condition.
  • Anemia: Anemics tend to be affected by menstrual pain.
  • Anorexia: Anorexic women also tend to suffer from this discomfort.
  • Hormones: Hormones can also play havoc with your body. Some experts explain that menstrual cramps happen because of excessive uterus contractions caused by the release of a hormone called prostaglandin by the uterus. This hormone may even affect the stomach and intestines, causing some women to throw up, faint, or suffer from diarrhea.
Secondary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that happens to women with abnormalities within or outside their uterus. This condition appears in women who have a uterus infection, tumor, endometriosis, etc. Medical consultation and treatment are highly recommended for this condition.

HOW TO COPE WITH IT
As long as the menstrual pain doesn't interfere with your daily activities, you don't have to worry. Bear in mind that regular exercise definitely helps smoothen the uncomfortable feelings caused by the womb contractions. Exercise will increase the release of natural endorphins (a chemical naturally released in the brain which reduces pain, and which in large amounts can make you feel relaxed and/or energetic) and suppress prostaglandin from being released. Pay attention to what you eat before and during your period. A low-fat vegetarian diet was found to lower menstrual pain. If your menstrual pain is really disturbing, like in the secondary case, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. Dysmenorrhea only happens when an ovum (egg) is released. So, don't be shocked when your doctor prescribes you birth control pills. The pills prevent ovulation (the release of an egg). Just make sure to ask what the side effects of the pills are and how long you should take them.

So, gals...greet your monthly guest with your biggest and sweetest smile. By understanding it, hopefully your boyfriend will be the best guy of the century, your mom and dad the most understanding parents, and your siblings like angels to you.

Breast Cancer

Article first published as How to Drastically Lower Your Breast Cancer Risk on Technorati.

In 1997, 41,200 women died of cancer, a woman every thirteen minutes. She could be a generous grandmother, a marvelous mom, a super sister or a gorgeous girlfriend. But the tragic thing is, some of these deaths could have been avoided, if only these women knew how to detect their cancer before it gets to the point of no return, when therapy and rescue are impossible. Ninety-seven percent of women whose breast cancer is detected early with no spreading beyond the breasts will survive. Women can lower their risk of dying of breast cancer by doing simple procedures to examine their breasts for early signs of cancer.

Breast cancer
Breast cancer happens when breast tissues grow at an abnormal and usually faster rate. The abnormal cell doesn't function normally and is called cancer cell. The abnormal growth can be benign, which means that it doesn't spread outside its original site. Or it can be malignant, in which case the cancer cells can travel to other body parts and wherever they stop, they cause abnormal, cancerous growth.
Doctors can detect breast cancer by a procedure called mammography, a kind of X-ray examination of the breasts. With mammography, a breast tumor can be detected up to two years before they can be felt. Usually, when a tumor is already palpable (that is, felt as a lump in the breast) it means that it has grown quite big, so action must immediately be taken. Doctors can recommend various kind of therapy, like chemotherapy (using drugs to kill the cancer cells), radiation and surgery to/or the breast.

Risk Factors
A risk factors is anything that increases your chance of getting a disease. However, having one or even several risk factors does not mean you will get the disease, it simply means that you have a greater chance of getting it. Some risk factors you can control, others you can’t.

The following are these you can’t control:
Gender: Women have more breast cells and these are more exposed to the influence of female hormones, so just by being born a female gives you a greater risk of getting breast cancer. Although breast cancer affects the males too, it is 100 times more common in women than in men.

Aging: Your risk increases as you get older. Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are above fifty when they are diagnosed. If you are in your early to mid twenties, you have 1 in 110,000 chance of getting breast cancer. Women in mid to late twenties have 1 in 12.800 chance, and those in early thirties have 1 in 3,700 chance.

Genetic make-up: If your mom or sister developed breast cancer you're three times more likely to get it too. Your risk increases if you have close relatives (aunt, grandmother, cousin) who also have the disease.

Race: Caucasian (white) women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer, but Afro-American (black) women are more likely to die from the disease because it is often detected late. Asian, Hispanic and Native American (Indian) women have a lower risk of developing the disease.

Menstrual period: Women who start menstruating early (before 12 years old) and stop late (after 50 years old) have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

And here are factors that you can control. Notice that some factors can lower risk, while others increase it:
Breastfeeding. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, breast cancer risk drops 4.3%, and every childbirth lowers risk 7%. Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding reduce the number of menstruations, which means that the breasts have less hormonal fluctuations.
Exercise. Women who exercise regularly have a lower risk of having breast cancer.
Not having children. Being childless or having a first child after thirty increases the risk of getting breast cancer.
Use of oral contraceptives (The Pill) and alcohol consumption. These increase your risk of getting breast cancer.
Obesity. Especially in women above 50, obesity can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. However, the link between obesity and breast cancer is not a simple one. The risk increases in women who become fat as an adult, but not in women who have been obese since childhood. Excess fat in the waist, stomach and breast areas increases the risk more than the same amount of fat in the hip and thigh areas (which means that having "thunder thighs" is relatively safer than having a "beer belly.")

Breast Self-Examination
Breast Self-Examination (BSE) should be done 5-7 days after menstruation (during menstruation the breasts might be tender or swollen, and this can affect the result) or if you are not regular, done on the same day every month. If you are using oral contraceptive (The Pill), do BSE before starting a new pack. Before doing your firs BSE, it's a good idea to consult a doctor so you'll know what normal, healthy breasts feel like. You need also to remember that breast come in many shapes and sizes and some people have different of breasts and some have asymmetrical ones. So know your own breasts well before you begin doing BSE.
Optional step : wear a pink ribbon on your lapel to show that you support and encourage women to be more aware of their risk of getting breast cancer.

OK, so the last one was not really a BSE procedure. But it's a good idea anyway. You'll never know whose life you might save by explaining to a curious looker what breast cancer and BSE is all about. Or you can start the people closest dearest to you. Your mom, perhaps, on whose breasts you warmth, security and comfort.Or your spunky and adorable sister.Your ultra cool friend. Or maybe, your self.

The following are steps you need to take to do:
1. Stand naked in front of a mirror with your hands on your tips and look at the shape and size of your breasts, pay attention to unusual swelling, hardness, redness, wrinkling and dimpling.
2. Hunch your shoulders forward and once again look at your breast.
3. Gently squeeze the nipples and watch for discharge.
4. Lie down with your left hand behind your head and place the pads of the three middle fingers (the parts with the fingerprints) of your right hand on the outer part of the left breast make a circular motion toward the nipples. You can also move your fingers up and down or in a straight line from your nipple outward. But always do the same kind of movement with all your BSE.
5. Do procedure No. 4 with the other breast. Watch for unusual lump, hardness or spots that are painful to touch. When you find any of these, consult a doctor immediately.

Brain Cancer

Brain cancer could be fatal. When our brain is damaged, we will rely on nothing. That is why brain cancer might be categorized the worst and the deadliest disease.

There are two types of brain tumors: primary brain tumors that originate in the brain and metastatic (secondary) brain tumors that originate from cancer cells that have migrated from other parts of the body.
Primary brain cancer rarely spreads beyond the central nervous system, and death result from uncontrolled tumor growth within the limited space of the skull. Metastatic brain cancer indicates advanced disease and has a poor prognosis.

Primary brain tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous. Both types take up space in the brain and may cause serious symptoms (e.g., vision or hearing loss) and complications (e.g., stroke).
All cancerous brain tumors are life threatening (malignant) because they have an aggressive and invasive nature. A noncancerous primary brain tumor is life threatening when it compromises vital structures (e.g., an artery).

INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE
In the United States, the annual incidence of brain cancer generally is 15-20 cases per 100,000 people. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in patients younger than age 35.
Primary brain tumors account for 50% of intracranial tumors and secondary brain cancer accounts for the remaining cases. Approximately 17,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with pri¬mary cancer each year and nearly 13,000 die of the disease. The annual incidence of primary brain cancer in children is about 3 per 100,000.

Secondary brain cancer occurs in 20-30% of patients with metastatic disease and incidence increases with age. In the United States, about 100,000 cases of secondary brain cancer are diagnosed each year.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
A brain tumor can obstruct the flow of cerebrosinal fluid (CSF), which results in the accumulation of CSF (hydrocephalus) and increased intracranial pressure (IICP). Nausea, vomiting, and headaches are common symptoms.
Brain tumors can damage vital neurological pathways and invade and compress brain tissue. Symptoms usually develop over time and their characteristics depend on the location and size of the tumor. A brain tumor in the frontal lobe may cause the following:
  • Behavioral and emotional changes
  • Impaired judgment
  • Impaired sense of smell
  • Memory loss
  • Paralyses on one side of the body (hemiplegia)
  • Reduced mental capacity (cognitive function)
  • Vision loss and inflammation of the optic nerve (papilledema)
A tumor located in both the right and left hemispheres of the frontal lobe often cause behavioral changes, cognitive changes, and a clumsy, uncoordinated gait.
A tumor in the parietal lobe may cause the following symptoms:
  • Impaired speech
  • Inability to write
  • Lack of recognition
  • Seizures
  • Spatial disorders
Vision loss in one or both eyes and seizures may result from a tumor located in the occipital lobe.
Tumors that develop in the temporal lobe are often asymptomatic (i.e. with-out symptoms), but some may cause impaired speech and seizures.

A tumor in the brainstem may produce the following symptoms:
  • Behavioral and emotional changes (e.g., irritability) ,
  • Difficulty speaking and swallowing
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache, especially in the morning,
  • Hearing loss
  • Muscle weakness on one side of the face (e.g., head tilt, crooked smile)
  • Muscle weakness on one side of the body (i.e., hemiparesis)
  • Uncoordinated gait
  • Vision loss, drooping eyelid (i.e., ptosis) or crossed eyes (i.e., strabismus)
  • Vomiting
Ependymoma originates in the lining of the ventricles and the spinal canal and may damage cranial nerves. When this happens, hydrocephalus, stiff neck, head tilt, and weakness may result.
Symptoms produced by a tumor of the meninges (meningioma) depend on which area of the brain is being compressed. They include:
  • Headache
  • Hearing loss
  • Impaired speech (i.e., dysphasia)
  • Incontinence
  • Mental and emotional changes (e.g., indifference, disinhibition)
  • Prolonged drowsiness (somnolence)
  • Seizures
  • Vision loss
A tumor located in the pituitary gland (i.e., pituitary adenoma) may increase the secretion of hormones and cause discontinuation of menstruation (i.e., amenorrhea) and excess secretion of milk (i.e., galactorrhea) in women. Impotence may occur in men.
Metastatic brain cancer tends to invade the brain tissue indiscriminately. Some symptoms include the following:
  • Bleeding
  • Headache
  • Impaired mental function
  • Motor dysfunction
  • Nausea
  • Seizures
  • Swelling
  • Vomiting
Complications drastic and sometimes life-threatening complications can develop with brain cancer.

MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS ABOUT CANCER

What is Brain Cancer?
The brain, like any other tissue in the body, is made up of individual cells which are much smaller than a pinpoint, and require a microscope to see them. These cells are the smallest units which compose the brain, and there are several different types. A brain cancer can arise from any of the cells which make up the brain. Basically, the brain's thinking cells (called “neurons”) are meant to divide rapidly before birth, and up until about 7 years old. At this time the brain u fully grown, and contains all the "neurons "that it ever will. Further development is by the existing cells making increasingly elaborate connections with each other, to communicate with one another.

Once the brain cells stop dividing in childhood, they are never meant to divide again. If the brain is injured, such as by trauma or stroke, specific cells within the brain (the “glial cells”) divide to form scar tissue, but the brain's thinking cells (the neurons) don't reproduce (although damaged ones may be repaired). You can see that the division of brain cells is under strict regulation and control. When this control is lost in a single cell, then it starts dividing in an uncontrolled manner.

Brain cancer starts in just one cell. As the cell makes more and more copies of itself, it grows to form a tumor (which means a swelling). A benign tumor stays where it starts, although it can grow very large and press on crucial areas. In con-trast, a malignant tumor has a capacity to spread, and is then called “brain cancer”. “Primary” brain cancer starts within the brain, and is then main subject of this transcript. In contrast, "secondary" brain cancer starts in some other organ (like lung or breast) and thenspreads to the brain. This is called “brain metastasis”.

WHAT CAUSES OR INCREASES THE RISK FOR BRAIN CANCER?
Like any cancer, the exact reason why one person gets brain cancer and another doesn't is unknown. However, several things have been found to increase the risk of developing brain cancer:
1) Having rare family diseases, carried in the genes, such as Neurofibromatosis (the “Elephant Man” syndrome), Von-Hippel Lindau, Sturge-Weber's or Turcot’s syndrome. These all belong to a family of diseases called the “phacomacoses” and present with cysts or bumps on or inside the body and high risk for brain tumors.
2) Exposure to certain chemicals, including chlorinated hydrocarbons (like PVC) and benzene, is associated with a higher risk of brain cancers.
3) Exposure to radiation has also been connected to developing brain cancers as well as other malignancies. The risk is greater if the person is exposed to at a young age to a higher dose. Pre-existing benign type tumors may become cancer¬ous (called "malignant degeneration) if radiated.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BRAIN CANCER?
This depends upon where in the brain the cancer arises, and how big it becomes before coming to medical attention. The brain has particular areas controlling thought, sight, hearing, sensation, move¬ment, coordination and mood. The upper brain area tends to control the more advanced thought functions, while the middle controls mood and movement and the rear (or “brain stem”) stimulates breathing and heart rate.

HOW COMMON IS BRAIN CANCER?
There are about 15,000 cases per year in the United States of “primary brain cancer”. This causes about 10,000 deaths per year. Thus primary brain cancers account for 2% of the cancers yearly in the U.S.A. Much more common is brain Metastasis with at least 80,000 cases per year in the U.S.A. Since many cancers spread to the brain, and it is a critical structure, this accounts for almost 20% of total cancer deaths each year. While primary brain tumors account for 20% of the cancers in children, the majority of cases are in older individuals.

HOW ARE BRAIN TUMORS DIAGNOSED AND EVALUATED?
A tumor simply means a swelling, and isn't necessarily cancer. A patient will come to the doctor with symptoms suspicious for a brain tumor, and the physician will perform a neurological examination to check the nerves or the brain which control the eyes and face, check for equal strength and sensation on both sides of the body, coordination and balance, and memory and judgment. He will look into the eyes for signs of increased pressure in the skull, such as swelling of the optic disks.

The next step is to order a radiological test to look for the tumor. Most commonly a CAT scan is gotten which an array of X-ray beams to visualize the brain. Often contrast material is injected into a vein during the CAT scan, as this highlight abnormal area in the brain. This test takes about 1/2 hour and the films are read by a radiologist. Large tumors are very easily seen on CAT scan, but ones smaller than 1 cm or in the cerebellum may not be obvious.

If a tumor is seen, or there is still high suspicion of one, the next test ordered is a Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) scan; it doesn't use radiation and is very accurate for detecting even small brain tumors in the cerebellum. It takes about an hour of lying still, is painless, and is much more expensive than a CAT scan, which is why they only order it after confirming a tumor.

The only way to be absolutely sure of what kind of tumor is present is to take a sample (biopsy) of it. Nowadays, biopsies are very safe (less than 1% of patients die from them) and are usually obtained under stereotactic guidance (a fine-needle is exactly placed into the tumor after visualizing it in 3 dimensions). The biopsy material is examined by a pathologist, a doctor who specializes in diagnosing disease from tissue samples. He does special stains on it and examines it under a microscope to see what type of tumor it is, and grades it depending upon how aggressive it looks. Rarely, the type of tumor is so obvious from the scans or is so deep in the brain that a biopsy isn't gotten, the tumor is treated based upon what’s it's presumed to be.

Other possible tests include an MRI-of the spine for certain tumors (medulloblastoma and high grade ependymoma) which tend to seed down the spine, a spinal tap to look for cancer cells shedding into the cerebral-spinal fluid that bathes the brain, and spinal cord, and an endocrine (hormonal) blood test evaluation for pituitary or mid-brain tumors. We may test to look for the origin of the tumor elsewhere in the body if it is believed not to have started in the brain. Spread of primary brain tumors to other body organs is very rare, but when it occurs it's usually to lung or bone marrow.

Historically, treatment of brain tumors has used surgery, radiation treatment and/or chemotherapy. Each of these has improved dramatically over the past decades. It is critical for the patient to get the correct treatment for brain cancer, the first time. This is because treatment of relapsed cancer isn't as successful as proper initial treatment when the diagnosis is first made. Nonetheless, newer techniques of pinpoint-accuracy radiation, microsurgery, chemotherapy and gene therapy offer more hope to the patient with brain cancer than ever before.
